RIGHT TO REFUSE
UNSAFE WORK
33.13 URBAN COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT
If you honestly believe that your safety is at risk or the work you are doing will endanger someone else’s safety, you can exercise your right to refuse unsafe work.
o Inform the supervisor and health and safety representative/union representative of the refusal immediately
o The member exercising this right will not suffer any lost wages
o As soon as the supervisor is notified, they must conduct an investigation
o Neither the worker, or any other worker, will be permitted to perform the duties giving rise to the work refusal until an investigation has been completed
o The member invoking the work refusal and the health and safety/union representative are entitled to be present during the investigation
o The corporation may temporarily assign the member to another similar job until the unsafe situation is corrected, providing that this reassignment does not violate the Collective Agreement
SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTANCE:
The Special Needs and Moving On Projects provide resources and support for workers at the post office whose children have disabilities. The projects are available to members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and the Union of Postal Communications Employees (Public Service Alliance of Canada). The Special Needs Project is geared to families with young children; the Moving On Project is for adult sons and daughters with special needs. Life is more demanding when you work and have a child with special needs. Learn more about our Special Needs and Moving On projects.
