WE CAN REVERSE THESE CUTS

We have to keep the pressure up on the federal government to reverse the cuts the Conservatives made to our postal service. Restoring delivery to homes affected by the cuts since 2013, and expanding our services will save even more decent jobs. CUPW just showed (again) that taking action gets results. Now it’s time to show we know how to make things better, not only for postal workers, but for the public that we serve.

WE DID IT, BUT THERE IS STILL MORE WORK TO DO!

Letter from CUPW Local President, Dean Woronoski (October 26th/15)

WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?
CONTACT YOUR LOCAL MP AND ASK ABOUT:

  • Restoring door to door mail delivery to those households that were eliminated since 2013.
  • We want a full public review of our postal service.
  • Look at options for service expansion.
  • Revenue generation which would include postal banking.
  • Refrain from stopping home mail delivery cuts, until they have conducted a full public review of Canada Post.
  • Include a review of the Canadian Postal Service Charter.

Canadian Union of Postal Workers Media Release - October 21/2015

OTTAWA - The Canadian Union of Postal Workers is calling for an immediate halt to the door-to-door delivery cuts scheduled in the coming weeks prior to the Liberals forming the new government.
“The postal cuts were driven by the Conservatives. Now they are no longer in power, it’s time to hit the brakes,” said Mike Palecek, national president of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
Several neighbourhood conversions to the controversial group mailboxes were scheduled on October 19, Election Day and still more are slated for November.
The union fears that Canada Post will forge ahead with its plan prior to the Liberal majority government taking the reins.
“We need to stop the cuts before more jobs are lost, before more damage is done to property and before more people lose this service,” said Palecek.
The Liberals campaigned on an election promise to stop the cuts to home mail delivery and hold a review of Canada Post.
These commitments have been welcomed by the union, but representatives say the Liberals need to move quickly and instruct Canada Post to call a halt.
“Many seniors, people with disabilities and others voted for the Liberals because they promised to stop the cuts to door-to-door delivery," said Palecek.
"It would be wrong for Canada Post to continue down this road now that the Liberals have been elected and the people have clearly spoken on this issue.”

SAVE DOOR-TO-DOOR CANVASSING WITH IRENE MATHYSSEN, MP WAS A SUCCESS!

canvassingIrene (17K)

On February 21st supporters of Irene Mathyssen, MP and supporters of our cause of saving door-to-door delivery went to the streets to campaign. The public signed petitions that Irene Mathyssen, MP is going to bring to the floor of parliament. The petition is to stop the cuts to the postal service.

We the undersigned residents of Canada draw the attention of the House to the following:

  • THAT Canada Post is a vital communications link that helps connect the country;
  • THAT eliminating home delivery for millions of urban customers and slashing rural hours will unfairly impact seniors and people with disabilities;
  • THAT these planned cuts will mean the loss of up to 8,000 good-paying jobs;
  • THAT drastically increasing postal rates will make life even more expensive for cash-strapped families, small businesses and charitable organizations;
  • THAT you cannot save a business by cutting service and raising prices.
THEREFORE, we call on the Government of Canada to stop these devastating cuts to our postal service.
Petition to stop the cuts to our postal service.

LONDON CITY HALL
Civic Works Committee Meeting
(Tuesday, Feb. 3/2015 @ 4:00pm)

Open letter to Mayor Matt Brown, members of the Civic Works Committee, and Ward 11 Councillor, Stephen Turner

Tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb. 3/2015) at the Civic Works Committee, at 4:00 pm, at City Hall you will hear that Londoners want this issue of door to door delivery discussed in a transparent and open forum at a Town Meeting. If such a meeting is held, and if a poll of Londoners shows that door to door delivery is valued, then I hope you will stand up to Canada Post and decline community mailboxes in London.

Thank you for listening to a citizen.

Sincerely,

Roberta Cory
(Roberta is Chair of the London Chapter of the Council of Canadians.)
